Safety

Propane is an approved clean alternative fuel under the Clean Air act of 1990. Propane is a nontoxic fuel that does not contaminate ground water or soil.

The below information are safety tips when using propane:

What to Do if You Smell Propane:

Safety Video 

  • Immediately extinguish all open flames.
  • Get everyone out of the area where gas is smelled.
  • Do not try to light any appliance.
  • Do not touch any electric switch; do not use any phone in the building.
  • Immediately call your propane supplier from a neighbor’s phone or on your cell phone off of the property.
  • If you cannot reach your propane supplier call 911.
  • Use only your hands to turn the gas knob. Never use tools. If knob does not turn call a certified propane technician.

Proper Handling of Portable Propane Tanks:

  • Do not use or store any type of propane tank in your basement or living space.
  • When transporting portable propane tanks, properly secure the tank inside the vehicle.
  • Contact your Valley Wide Cooperative Certified Propane Technician to connect tanks to appliances.
  • Never leave portable propane tanks in closed vehicles.
  • Always secure your portable tank when used for cooking, outside heaters, or hot water.

How to Turn Off Your Tank:

  • If you smell gas, turn it off if it is safe to do so
  • Contact your Valley Wide Energy Expert right away
  • DO NOT TURN IT BACK ON without a professional propane provider

Properly Use Propane Appliances with Care:

  • Never use your propane BBQ indoors.
  • Call a Valley Wide Cooperative Certified Propane Technician to connect all of your appliances and perform a leak test.
  • Refrain from using stoves, ovens, or other propane appliances for space heating.

To prevent issues with your propane, set up regularly delivery appointments with Valley Wide Cooperative. Our technicians are good about staying on top of customer propane needs, but having a set date every 3 weeks or so, depending on how big your tank is, will help you remain safe.
